Data Deus

Expanding the role of design.
Thesis Exhibition, 2022

We consider a plausible future in which Big-Data is idolized. This speculative civilization is structured around the capture of data and the use of quantum computers to determine the optimal lives for its citizens. All decisions are made by AI algorithms as human intelligence is unable to compete with its computing power.

In order to maximize the flow of data, children's products are fitted with sensors that track vitals and behavior. At the age of 18, a mandated chip is implanted into citizens' hands during a coming-of-age rite. Family looks on as their children commit themselves to the Data Deus society.

The citizens embrace Big-Data with a religious zeal, sacrificing privacy, liberty, and every serendipitous experience. The promised utopia is right around the corner - efficient and clean.

But Big-Data is a tool and not a god, and the way you use a tool dictates the results. The clarity of death reveals the strength of what you value most. What was it all for again?
